"This is one of the last vessels of its kind"

The old sailing ship spent years ferrying timber along the California coast and even more time riding the pitching swells around Alaska's Aleutian Islands, fishing for salmon and cod.

But what almost sank the C.A. Thayer, a wooden schooner built in 1895, were the rain drops that peppered its decks for decades as it rested in San Francisco Bay as a floating museum.

'In some places you could have put your hand through the wood,' said Jim Hayes of Bay Ship & Yacht in Alameda, where for the past three years the vessel has been undergoing renovation. 'Salt water preserves wood. But over the years fresh water was seeping through the deck to the internal framing. It was just rotting away.' Read more
